What is a Paternity DNA test?

During a Paternity test, we analyse different genetic locations along the DNA molecule.

A person possesses two (of many possible) alleles at each location. See here for What is an allele? The alleles are identified by a number. These are inherited from the parents at conception. One comes from the mother and one from the father.

The following happens when we compare the DNA profiles of biological parents. One of the child’s alleles (numbers) will match up with a number from the mother’s sample. While the other should match up with an allele from the father’s sample.

If these alleles match at all locations, we report the person as the biological father of the child. This proves they have passed these genetic markers to the child at conception.

Locations where there is NO match, will exclude a person as a biological father. This is because it is only possible to pass on to your offspring the alleles from your own DNA profile.

The Paternity DNA test kit contains the correct number of mouth swabs required. The cost of the test analysis is based on the combination of people tested. Remember, no payment is required until you send back your samples.
