What is a Maternity DNA test?

A maternity DNA test confirms whether a woman is the biological mother of a child by comparing their DNA profiles.

DNA samples are collected using simple, non-invasive cheek swabs and analysed at a UKAS ISO 17025-accredited UK laboratory.

Each person’s DNA is examined across multiple genetic markers. A child inherits half of their DNA from their biological mother, meaning the child’s DNA profile should match the mother’s profile at every tested location. If all markers match, maternity can be confirmed with a very high degree of accuracy.

Maternity DNA testing is commonly used to resolve uncertainty, correct documentation, or provide personal peace of mind. The test is suitable for adults and children of all ages (parental consent is required for under-16s).

All testing is carried out confidentially, with clear instructions provided to allow samples to be collected safely and discreetly at home.

Who takes part in the maternity test?

The standard maternity test involves:

● The child

● The alleged biological mother

This test compares the child’s DNA profile with that of the alleged mother to determine whether a biological relationship exists.

Testing without the father

The alleged father does not need to take part in a maternity DNA test. Results can be accurately produced using samples from the child and alleged mother only.

Testing more than one child

Additional children can be included within the same test where required. The correct number of mouth swabs is provided based on the option selected at checkout.

Consent for children

Where a child is under 16 years of age, consent must be provided by a person with parental responsibility. Clear instructions and consent forms are included with the test kit.

2. How long do maternity DNA test results take?

Results are typically issued the next working day once all samples have been received and approved for analysis by our laboratory.

3. When do I pay for the maternity DNA test?

For this pay-later option, you pay a low-cost DNA sample collection kit (£4.99) when ordering.

The laboratory analysis fee is paid later, once your samples are returned to our UK laboratory. All prices are shown clearly before you place your order.

4. Can the laboratory analysis fee be split?

Yes. Where available, options to split the laboratory analysis fee are shown clearly at the point your samples are returned to the laboratory.

5. Does everyone need to be present to take a maternity test?

No. The maternity DNA test only requires samples from the child and the alleged biological mother. Samples can be collected separately and returned together using the labelled envelopes provided in the test kit.

6 Will anyone else know I’ve taken a maternity DNA test?

No. All testing is handled confidentially, with discreet packaging and secure delivery of results. Your personal information and test results are never shared with third parties.

7. Can this maternity test be used for court or immigration purposes?

No. This home maternity DNA test is for peace-of-mind purposes only. If you require a legally admissible maternity test for court or immigration, please contact us to arrange a witnessed legal DNA test.

8. Can a maternity DNA test result be inconclusive?

Maternity DNA testing is highly reliable and usually produces a clear result. In rare cases, an inconclusive result may be reported if the DNA evidence does not provide sufficient statistical certainty. Should this occur, we will clearly explain the result and outline any options that may be available to support further analysis.
