What is a Grandparent DNA Test?
A Grandparent DNA test is used to help establish a biological relationship between a grandparent and grandchild when direct parent testing is not available.
Where possible, we strongly recommend including two grandparents in the same test. Testing with two grandparents provides clearer, more reliable results — and there is no additional cost to include both grandparents as part of your test.
This test is commonly used when it is not possible to obtain a DNA sample from the alleged parent, or where further reassurance is needed to support an indirect relationship assessment.
Our Grandparent DNA test analyses 45 genetic markers as standard, providing a high level of accuracy and result clarity, particularly for more complex family relationships.
Where available, including a known biological parent (such as the child’s mother) can further strengthen result confidence. There is no additional charge to include one known biological parent in the test.
This test is suitable for adults and children of all ages. Where a participant is under 16 years of age, consent must be provided by a person with parental responsibility.
Who takes part in a Grandparent DNA Test?
A Grandparent DNA test compares DNA from a child and one or two biological grandparents to assess whether a biological relationship is present.
Where possible, we strongly recommend testing with two grandparents.
Including both biological grandparents provides significantly greater genetic information, improving result clarity and overall confidence — at no additional cost. For this reason, testing with two grandparents is always the preferred option.
The test can still be carried out using DNA from one grandparent if required. However, using two grandparents gives the most informative and reliable outcome and is recommended whenever available.
Including a known biological parent
Where possible, including a known biological parent (such as the child’s mother) can further enhance result clarity. There is no additional charge to include one known biological parent in the test.
Testing more than one child
If more than one child needs to be tested, additional children can be included within the same test. The correct number of mouth swabs will be provided based on the option selected at checkout.
Consent for children
Where a child is under 16 years of age, consent must be provided by a person with parental responsibility.
Clear instructions and consent forms are included with your test kit.

Grandparent DNA Testing – Frequently Asked Questions
1. How accurate is the Grandparent DNA Test?
Our Grandparent DNA test analyses 45 genetic markers as standard, providing a high level of accuracy for complex family relationship testing.
Testing with two biological grandparents gives the most informative and reliable result, as it provides greater genetic comparison. Where only one grandparent is available, the test can still be carried out, but including two grandparents is always recommended whenever possible — at no additional cost.
2. How long do Grandparent DNA test results take?
Results are typically issued the next working day once all DNA samples have been received and approved for analysis at our UKAS ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
You’ll be kept informed throughout the process, and results are delivered securely and confidentially.
3. Who can take part in a Grandparent DNA Test?
A Grandparent DNA test compares DNA from a child and one or two biological grandparents to assess whether a biological relationship is present.
Where possible, we strongly recommend testing with two grandparents, as this provides significantly greater genetic information and improves overall result confidence — with no extra cost.
The test can also include a known biological parent (such as the child’s mother) to further enhance result clarity, again at no additional charge.
4. Can children take part in a Grandparent DNA Test?
Yes. Children of all ages can take part.
If a participant is under 16 years of age, consent must be provided by a person with parental responsibility. Clear instructions and consent forms are included with your test kit.
5. Can I pay later or spread the cost of the Grandparent DNA Test?
Yes. With our pay-later option, you pay £4.99 for a low-cost grandparent DNA sample collection kit when ordering, with free UK postage included.
The laboratory analysis fee is paid later, once your samples are returned to our UK laboratory.
Where available, you may also choose to split the laboratory fee, paying part when samples are returned and the balance when results are ready. All available options are shown clearly before you place your order.
6. What if one or both grandparents are unavailable?
The test can be carried out using DNA from one grandparent if required. However, using two grandparents provides the most informative and reliable outcome and is recommended whenever possible.
If you’re unsure which participants are best to include, our team is happy to advise before you order.
7. Will anyone else know I’ve taken a Grandparent DNA Test?
No. All testing is carried out confidentially and discreetly.
Your test kit is delivered in plain packaging, and results are shared securely. We do not notify any third parties.
8. Can this Grandparent DNA Test be used for legal or court purposes?
No. This test is provided for peace-of-mind purposes only.
If you require a legally admissible Grandparent DNA test (for court, immigration, or official use), this must be arranged separately with supervised sample collection.
Please call 0800 988 7107 to speak to our team for guidance.
9. Can a grandparent DNA test result be inconclusive?
Grandparent DNA testing is a more complex form of relationship testing and, in some cases, may result in an inconclusive outcome. This can occur when the DNA evidence does not provide enough statistical certainty to confirm or exclude the relationship being tested. If this happens, we will clearly explain the result and discuss any available options that may help achieve a more conclusive outcome.
